  • Go with the Low Flow.

To help reduce our restroom water consumption, we've installed low flow toilets and faucets.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Handy Water Saver.

Low-flow hand sink faucets in our food prep areas dramatically reduce water usage.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Powerful Clean.

We wash this area with a pressure washer, using significantly less water than a conventional hose and spray nozzle.

  • Fuel for Thought.

Thanks to our fuel-saving strategies, we were the only Texas-based company to be invited to serve as a charter partner in the EPA's Smart Way Transportation Partnership.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Downsizing Diesel.

We've reduced our diesel use by over 830,000 gallons each year and carbon dioxide emissions by 8,300 tons. That's like taking 614,815 cars off the road.

  • Close the Door.

Instead of leaving these refrigerated display cases open, we put doors on them and reduce their energy use by 70%

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Made in the Shade.

We have special shades on our open front refrigerated cases. We pull them down when we're closed to help reduce their energy usage by 6-8%.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Bright Idea!

Motion activated LED lights in our frozen and refrigerated food cases save energy, produce less heat, and last longer than fluorescents.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Let the Daylight Shine.

We use computers to dim our energy-efficient LED lights according to how much daylight is coming through our windows and skylights.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Cool Reflections.

Highly reflective roofing material helps reduce the heat load on our building and in turn, the amount of energy needed to cool the inside.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Power from the Sun.

11,000 square feet of solar panels on our roof generate more than 2,000 kilowatt hours of energy annually. That's enough to power approximately 16 homes every year.

H-E-B's Commitment
to Recycling

  • Keep up the Good Work!

With your help, we've diverted more than 790,000 tons of waste from landfills since 2006 — more than the annual waste of 390,000 households.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Compost it, Don't Trash it.

Unsold produce that isn't suitable for the food bank — along with trimmings from our bakery, prepared food, deli, and floral departments — is collected and composted at a local facility.

Stewardship

  • A Natural Water Filter.

This rain garden captures runoff from the parking lot, acting as a natural filtration system and slowing the flow of water into the Mueller community's regional water quality system.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Water Smart.

Our irrigation system uses "smart" controllers set to drought restriction watering cycles, with rain and freeze sensor shut-offs.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Even Water can be Recycled.

Our irrigation system taps Austin's Water Reclamation Initiative, which provides treated wastewater for non-drinking uses. Citywide, this program saves more than 1.2 billion gallons of drinking water every year.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Water Wise.

We use water bubblers with pressure regulating stems to water our trees and help reduce water loss.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • A Rugged Specimen.

This tree has exhibited remarkable hardiness. It survived for years in the former airport's parking lot before being moved here to make room for development in that area.

  • •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
  • Back to Nature.

Previously a paved area dating back to the site's former life as an airport, this rain garden has been replanted with native vegetation and mulched with chippings from downed tree limbs from the Austin area.
